Many photographers feel that a photo should stand on its own, without any additional commentary or explanation. After all, if a photo is worth a thousand words, why would any explanation be necessary?
The photo should speak for itself.
Except that many don’t. Or the story they tell differs from the reality that existed when the shot was taken. Or possibly, the complete story is more than any one photo could possibly tell.
Unless there is something unusual or unique about the photo, I don’t need to know about the technical details. Gear and settings don’t matter too much to me, but I find the context and backstory of a photo to be helpful - or at least interesting.
Maybe you do too.
Fair Judge
I am happy to report that my photo, Fair Judge, has been accepted into the MN State Fair Fine Arts Competition. Yay!
The MN State Fair is an annual get together of about 2 million people held at the end of August in St. Paul, MN.
Last August I had major surgery and wasn’t sure if I would even make it to the fair. Fortunately, I was discharged in time to get there before it wrapped up on Labor Day.
After leaving the hospital, standing was still difficult and walking more than about 50 feet was nearly impossible. Going to the busiest state fair in the country on a hot summer day probably wasn’t the smartest idea, but after being cooped up in a tiny hospital room for 10 days I had to get out and experience life again, ideally with my camera.
The MN State Fair does a great job making it accessible for people with mobility issues. Renting a scooter allowed me to get around and navigate the crowds. It also gave me a different perspective than I would normally shoot at.
The gentleman facing the camera is an official at the many horse events held during the fair at the Lee & Rose Warner Coliseum. I don’t know him personally, but I’ve seen him many times over the years. Always looking sharp in a western-style suit and tie with proper headwear to match, his look commands respect.
I imagine he’s the kind of guy that rarely raises his voice, but he can crush you with a look.
Maybe this look. You be the judge.
